SMEs represent large proportion of the government's new CloudStore

Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make up around half of the firms represented on the government's recently unveiled CloudStore.

This is a boon to SMEs that may have found it difficult in the past to win public sector contracts when in competition with much larger firms.

In an interview with ZDNet UK on Monday, a Cabinet Office spokesman explained: "The way the CloudStore is set up, the idea is to make the whole process more flexible, make the procurement process simpler, and this will have the effect of making things more straightforward for small companies".

"It's all part of that picture and CloudStore fits into that appropriately in terms of the ease of procurement," he added.

CloudStore is a new pay-as-you-go service launched on Sunday that allows bodies in the public sector to have easy access to cloud computing services.

There are currently around 1,700 services available from over 250 suppliers.

Through the implantation of the CloudStore, the government hopes to make procurement processes cheaper for public sector bodies while improving the potential for competition, which in-turn drives down prices.
