Schools should encourage entrepreneurship

24 January 2012

Schools need to have a bigger role in encouraging young people to become self employed.

This is the view of the Forum of Private Business in its submission to the All-party Parliamentary Small Business Group's entrepreneurship inquiry.

It is particularly important for self-employment and entrepreneurship to be focused on in schools because that is the place where children learn about their futures and start dreaming about careers.

"They have a vital role to play in encouraging entrepreneurial spirit – we recognise that and so do our members – which is why we are calling for a greater focus by government on making sure schools are given the tools for the job. That includes a more appropriate curriculum," explained Jane Bennett, the Forum's head of campaigns.

It follows a new campaign by the government to encourage more people to become entrepreneurs and pay self employed tax.

Titled Business in You, it encourages people to set up a business based on what they are passionate about.
