Government cuts provide blow for IT contractors

28 June 2011

IT freelancers operating through small umbrella companies have been dealt a blow by the government.

The coalition has terminated the contracts of IT professionals that had been working on public sector projects, with the jobs being passed on to Capita in a £123 million deal, Computer Weekly reports.

It is thought the measures have been taken in order to cut costs, although accusations of hypocrisy have risen from some quarters.

Some small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are disappointed with the decision in light of the government's recent pledge to engage more with less renowned firms.

However, a government spokeswoman insisted that the coalition was still intent on doing 25 per cent of its business with SMEs and plans have been put in place to make this happen.

Freelancers who have lost out due to the economy measures may want to heed the advice of Creative Boom editor Katy Cowan, who recently suggested that sole traders need to do all they can to market their services.
